How to beat procrastination

Procrastination is one of the biggest ways we prevent our creativity and ourselves from moving forward to achieve our goals.

But how many times do you procrastinate without even realising you're doing it? To remedy this is to admit that you procrastinate, then look at the ways and the times you're most likely to get into the habit of changing it.

So, here are the top 10 favourite procrastination tips to help you identify what takes up most of your time, unwittingly & innocently.

1. Watching television.

An absolute old favourite to relax in front of. With so many channels, DVD’s and other formats, it's all too easy to snuggle down for your favourite show, only to surface hours later & not noticing the time go by.

2. Emails.

Constantly checking every few minutes "just in case" you've received an email of utmost importance, means you never get in the flow of creating.  Your pre- occupied the entre time.

3. Shopping.

Browsing, window shopping for the perfect dress, cutting board, or a new set of paints is a common way to procrastinate. You have what you need.

4. Reorganising.

Of-course you can't create in these conditions.  Your mind is preoccupied with rearranging your kitchen, the garden needs tending to,  the fence needs a new coat of fresh paint & the  bushes need trimming. You need to spend at least half hour, then an hour reorganising & tending to them all before you can create ANYTHING. Sound familiar?

5. Reading.

Books are fantastica for learning, imagination and inspiration. But if you only ever READ about creativity, instead of getting creative with your own projects, this is just another way to procrastinate.

6. Sleeping.

We all need sleep, of course we do. But when that "5 more minutes" becomes 30 or 60 as a way of avoiding getting up, and we all do it at times, it's time you admitted you're using sleep to procrastinate.

7. Internet surfing.

Again, this is absolutely something that's become easier than ever to do & we all do it. Seeking genuine ideas, research for inspiration or catching up with your online communities is all good in moderation. But if it's ALL you're doing and never creating, it's simply another way of procrastinating.

8. Cleaning.

Just as you go to create, you notice a side dish by the sink. How can you possibly concentrate with THAT there? Washing one dish leads to tidying round the kitchen and before you know it, an hour's passed and you've tidied a slightly untidy kitchen that could have waited...

10. Preparing and eating food.

You sat down to create and thought "I think I'm hungry, I'll grab a snack now otherwise I won't be able to concentrate on creating"? Of-course we all need to eat, but how often do you do this when you're not really that hungry at all?

8. "Essential" Research.

Spending long periods of time for that perfect guide can be invaluable and keep you inspired and informed, but when you're spending 3 hours every day online searching to beating procrastination, you might want to stop and think about what you're doing.

So, recognise any of these top 10 procrastination habits?

The first steps to overcoming procrastination are admitting that you do it and identifying the times and the ways you're most likely to procrastinate.
